The UK Spa Association attended a meeting with central government on Saturday evening and will continue to work closely with the department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), and the devolved governments over the Christmas period.
Please find below a summary of the changes:
In England, spas and gyms are now closed in Tier 4 areas including London and parts of the South East and the East of England. The regulations came into force at 7am yesterday, Sunday 20thDecember.

No exemptions were placed in the regulations as a result of the wish to have “tighter restrictions” in Tier 4 given the prevalence of the disease in those areas.
To clarify at this time close-contact services can’t operate in any setting in a Tier 4 area, including.
· Salon, spa or mobile
· Education and training
· Hair and makeup on Film and TV
We acknowledge the 30th December review date for these restrictions.
Personal care, including saunas and steam rooms, pools and gyms still remain open in Tier 1-3
The Welsh Government announced that all close contact services and gyms in Wales will close in Tier 4. The level 4 lockdown will be reviewed in three weeks.
- Closure of all retail, except essential retail
- Click and Collect will not be permitted for those non-essential businesses required to close
- Closure of close contact services, except: close contact for Film and TV production; those ancillary to medical, health and social care services; and sports massage therapy. Those permitted to open must operate an appointments only system and must record contact details of all customers. Face coverings must be worn when permitted to open, as per exemptions above
- Closure of : swimming pools, indoor sports and exercise facilities, leisure centres, gyms
Financial packages for the 6-week period are expected to be announced next week.

Mainland Scotland will enter level 4 restrictions from 00:01am on 26 December and will run for at least three weeks. Level 4 restrictions require the closure of all close contact services and indoor gyms.
