UK Spa Association
Scrummi - Spotlight On
Tell us a little bit about who you are and your company.
I am the Founder, and Managing Director of Scrummi We supply compostable, sustainable, biogenic textiles to spas in the UK, Europe, USA and New Zealand. Scrummi products are used by many well-known spas such as Aqua Sana, Champneys, Fairmont Windsor, Clarins and several colleges. I was also the co-founder of the Sustainable Spa Association.
What do you offer in terms of sustainability for the spa and wellness sector?
By using Scrummi towels and sheets in combination with traditional textiles, spas can achieve laundry reduction of up to 90%. Scrummi products create a soft, hygienic barrier between the guest and the towels which enhances their comfort and experience. By doing this, it is not necessary to launder the towels and sheets after each guest which in turn, substantially reduces laundry. We also supply a range of accessory items such as mitts, headbands, and duvet covers, all compostable!
Scrummi is the only towel brand in the world to have achieve EN13432 compostable certification standard from TUV Austria.
Tell us about your latest project and how these fits with Sustainability.
We are working on reducing the amount of product miles Scrummi items travel from factory to customer. This is the biggest single thing we can do to reduce our product C02 emissions. We manufacture all our products in Northern Europe and in the UK all last leg deliveries are done using C02 neutral delivery methods.
By 2023 we hope to have removed plastic from 100% of our packaging, we are currently at 84%.
Finally, we are working on a collection service for our customers who want to compost their used towels. This will be launched in the Autumn to UK Spas.
What would your 1 piece of advice be for anyone wanting to open up their offering to be more sustainable?
Take a holistic view, plan and get everyone involved. Being sustainable is not about single actions, it's about a mindset and journey. Scrummi products can play their part but Spas who are serious should sign up with the Sustainable Spa Association which has some great tools and advice which can help you really make an impact.
